The Palmiet Nature Reserve (PNR) is the only Reserve in the eThekweni (Durban) Metro Region that is managed by the local community. It is headed up by the Reserve Manager Steve Butler Tel 031 203 7065 (b/h) who is a municipal employee. There are three field rangers and Durban Metro contributes to an alien plant removal team on a rotational system. The management Committee members are drawn from volunteers from the Westville area as well as the University of Kwa Zulu Natal Westville campus

'The Committee comprises

  • 4 elected members of the Friends of PNR
  • The PNR Manager
  • 1 City Councillor (same ward as PNR)
  • 1 Representative of the Palmiet River watch
  • 4 Representatives from each of the adjacent urban
    conservancies: Westville,Umvuzi. Loerie Park
    and University of Durban- Westville
  • 1 Representative of the Wildlife and environment
    society of SA (Highway Branch)
  • 1 Representative of Ezemvelo KwaZulu Natal Wildlife.

Vision

  • To recognise that PNR is part of a wider Metropolitan Open Space system
  • Preserve a witness area of the former natural heritage of this region
  • Ensure the maintenance of bio-diversity and the removal of alien species
  • Encourage public usage for passive recreation & and education programme
  • Engage in research, monitor,document ecological systems & human impact to provide management strategies.
  • Maintain harmonious relationships with properties adjacent to the PNR.
